Royal Marines Commando
Royal Marines Fitness Test (RMFT)

The RMFT is taken in the first two weeks of main training at CTCRM Lympstone, after the two-week Recruit Orientation Phase: multi-stage fitness test (bleep) to level 11, 5 overhand pull-ups, 40 push-ups and 50 sit-ups, plus a weapon-handling test. Earlier, the 5-day Candidate Preparation Course requires at least 30 press-ups, 40 sit-ups and 4 pull-ups. All time and distance standards are the same for men and women.

Questions

Are the standards the same for women?

Yes. The Royal Navy states that all criteria tests (time and distance) share exactly the same standards and calls it a gender-free training programme.

What comes before the RMFT?

The Pre-Joining Fitness Assessment (bleep test to level 10.8, then press-ups, sit-ups and pull-ups to the bleep, can be retaken) and the 5-day Candidate Preparation Course, where the minimum is 30 press-ups, 40 sit-ups and 4 pull-ups. The site adds: never aim for the minimum.

What are the later Commando Tests?

In the final phase of the 32-week training: Endurance Course (73 min), 30-miler on Dartmoor (8 h), plus the 9-mile speed march (90 min) and Tarzan Assault Course (13 min) — the last two from an archived official page from 2016. Officers face tighter limits: 71 min, 90 min, 12 min and 7 h.
