Hellenic Navy Underwater Demolition Command (Διοίκηση Υποβρύχιων Καταστροφών, ΔΥΚ)
Basic combat diver course — entry tests (Σχολείο Βασικής Εκπαίδευσης Υ/ΚΤ)

Greek Navy combat divers (Υ/ΚΤ) are trained by the Underwater Demolition School of the ΔΥΚ in a basic course of 32 weeks, with dives to 40 m. Before the preliminary phase, applicants — men only, from any branch of the armed forces or security services — must pass eight pass/fail tests: a mile run in uniform and boots, push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, dips, a 5 m rope climb, a 300 m swim and a 15 m underwater swim.

New armed forces pay law ν. 5265/2026, in force retroactively from 1 Oct 2025; ranks are mapped to pay grades as valid until 31 Dec 2026. Basic salary = table amount × grade coefficient, rounded to the euro (our calculation). The diving risk allowance dates from a 2018 joint decision read from a reprint, and placing career NCOs in its middle category is our assumption, so it is provisional; special-mission compensation and family benefit are not included.

provisional = official source with a provisional legal status, a secondary source or our own calculation; see the sources.

Also required

  • Men only: officers, NCOs and soldiers of any specialty from the armed forces and security services, with at least upper-secondary education (λύκειο). Career Navy officers, NCOs and direct-entry personnel must be 28 or younger at the time of the tests; conscripts have no age limit if they hold a school-leaving certificate and a clean record; others follow the age limits of their own service.
  • An eighth test is not in the calculator: a 5 m rope climb without using the legs (Αναρρίχηση επί κάλω), pass/fail. Between tests 2 to 6 (push-ups to rope climb) there is a rest of at least 2 minutes; repetitions have no time limit, and the swims are done in a pool.
  • Medical and admin: a signed statement of awareness of the risks, a recompression chamber test and a medical certificate from the health board (ΑΝΥΕ). The basic course lasts 32 weeks and includes dives to 40 m.

Questions

Can women apply?

No. The Navy page states that applicants must be male officers, NCOs or soldiers. That is why the calculator has a single set of thresholds, for men.

Is 7:30 on the mile enough?

Not quite: the source asks for under 7.5 minutes on the mile and under 7 minutes on the 300 m swim, so the calculator's 7:30 and 7:00 are limits you must beat. The repetition tests have no time limit, but the reps must be continuous. There is no scoring scale — every test is pass/fail.

Where do the numbers come from?

From the Hellenic Navy page "Προϋποθέσεις συμμετοχής στο Σχολείο Βασικής Εκπαίδευσης Υ/ΚΤ" on hellenicnavy.gr (Underwater Demolition School), read on 18 October 2026. The page has no publication date (footer © 2024), so the standards may be older than they look.
