GSG 9 der Bundespolizei — Einsatzbeamter
Eignungsauswahlverfahren (EAV) — sports test minimums
GSG 9's five-day selection (Eignungsauswahlverfahren, EAV) opens on Monday with a sports test — bench press at 75% of body weight, pull-ups, the 12-minute Cooper run, a 100 m sprint and a standing long jump — followed later in the week by an indoor obstacle course, shooting, a height test, a stress run and psychological tests. Every event must be passed on its own: a weak result cannot be offset by a strong one. The minimums come from the old bundespolizei.de GSG 9 pages (archived January 2024), because the current unit page is being rebuilt.

What a GSG 9 operator earns
GSG 9 officers are federal police officers paid on the same A scale; basic salary and rank supplements are advance payments (Abschlagszahlungen) under the BMI circular of 3 Sep 2025 until the 2025/2026 pay act is passed. The police allowance (€228 after 2 years of service) and the GSG 9 allowance (€500, § 22 EZulV, already paid in training after passing the EAV) are paid in full side by side and are not raised with the advance payments. Not included: on-call pay (amount not published), hourly allowances and foreign deployment pay.
provisional = official source with a provisional legal status, a secondary source or our own calculation; see the sources.

Also required
- Completed police training in the intermediate or higher-intermediate service (mittlerer or gehobener Dienst) with the Federal Police or another German police force; there is no direct civilian entry and no preference for serving soldiers.
- Age: training must start before your 34th birthday. Driving licence category B. Application through official channels (Dienstweg); usually about 6 months from the call for applications to the EAV.
- GSG 9 medical fitness: eyesight and hearing, lung volume, stress ECG and possibly a spine X-ray; laser eye surgery is accepted if done at least 2 years before applying and without complications.
- Rest of the EAV week: IQ and personality tests, written and oral English, dexterity, technical-understanding and reaction tests, pistol and MP5 shooting (weapon handling matters more than hits), an unsecured height test and a mandatory stress run (Belastungslauf) followed by a concentration test — quitting it ends the selection; its distance is not published.
- Earlier step, the Federal Police entry sports test (men aged 18–29, 2 of 5 points per event): coordination course 18.0 s, 4 × 10 m shuttle run 10.3 s, 12-minute run 2,400 m; plus the German swimming badge in bronze (Deutsches Schwimmabzeichen Bronze).

Questions
Is the obstacle course limit 3:30 or 3:20?
Both appear on official pages: the EAV page and the Leistungsziel table give 3:30, while the obstacle course page says "under 3:20". We use 3:30 (two sources), but aim lower. Each obstacle allows at most 3 attempts; failing the rope (one attempt only) adds 20 s. In training the limits drop to under 3:00 (basic) and under 2:30 (specialist).
What happens after the EAV?
A ten-month basic and specialist training course (the current Federal Police careers site; older pages said 9 months in two 4.5-month modules), with a "Härtewoche" at the end of the basic phase. During training further minimums apply, e.g. shot put (7.25 kg) 8.00 m, long jump 4.75 m, a 9 km run in 38 min and the German lifesaving badge in silver. Specialisations such as sniper, tactical diving or parachuting come later in the unit.
Where do the numbers come from?
From the official GSG 9 pages of the old bundespolizei.de site — "Das Eignungsauswahlverfahren" (archived 19 January 2024) and the "Leistungsziel" table (archived 19 April 2023). The new unit page currently only says it is being revised, so the values are marked provisional. They are the same for all candidates; the source gives no separate values for women or by age.
What does GSG 9 pay?
What a GSG 9 operator earns: in the default scenario (Polizeiobermeister (A 8) · Stufe 3) €4,301 gross per month, rates from 1 May 2026. Some amounts are provisional — see the notes in the pay section. The pay calculator on this page lets you change rank, seniority and allowances.
