1st SFOD-D (Delta Force)
Entry requirements and the path to selection
1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta, widely known as Delta Force, is the US Army’s special missions unit for counter-terrorism and hostage rescue. It does not recruit from civilian life: the Army’s own recruiting notice for the “Fort Bragg Special Missions Unit” Operator Assessment and Selection Course asks for serving soldiers of any specialty with at least three years of service and a minimum age of 22. The notice publishes no fitness standards, so this page lists only the official entry conditions and points you to the closest published Army test.
This unit does not publish fitness standards for its selection. This page lists only what official sources say.

What we do not give, and why
The official notice does not mention a fitness test, a security clearance or airborne qualification. Figures that circulate online — run distances, land-navigation marches, pass rates — come from books, memoirs and forums and contradict each other, so we do not quote them.
Frequently asked questions
Can a civilian apply to Delta Force?
No. The official notice requires at least three years of Army service and the rank of sergeant, warrant officer or captain and above. The route is to join the Army first, in any specialty.
Which fitness test should I train for?
The selection test is not public. Every soldier takes the Army Fitness Test, and the Green Berets page shows the combat standard required for Special Forces entry — the closest published Army benchmark. The 75th Ranger page shows the Ranger standard.
Do operators get extra pay?
Yes. On top of normal Army pay, the Defense Department’s Financial Management Regulation lists an assignment incentive pay for Joint Special Operations Command special missions unit operators (Army): 750 dollars a month in the first three years and 1,000 dollars after that.
